The Stromness RNLI Lifeboat was launched at 11:58 and proceeded to the area given when they were informed that the casualty had been recovered and was being given medical assistance on board the Jean Elaine. The casualty was transferred to the lifeboat where the lifeboat crew administered further medical assistance.

The casualty was then transferred to the Coastguard Helicopter and evacuated to hospital. The Stromness RNLI lifeboat returned to Stromness where it was made ready for service again at 13:00. Sadly the casualty was pronounced dead later that day.

Violet, Dorothy and Kathleen in the Caledonian Canal en route to Girvan

The Stromness RNLI All Weather Lifeboat Violet, Dorothy and Kathleen, known locally as “VDK” left her operations base in Stromness Harbour for a round trip to Girvan where she underwent a refit lasting approximately four weeks.

Her place was taken by another Severn Class Lifeboat from the relief fleet number 17-17 called Fraser Flyer.  Fraser Flyer (Civil Service No. 43) entered the relief fleet in February 1999. The name was chosen to acknowledge the work of a Lifeboat Fund Chairman, Sir Angus Fraser, who sadly died in 2001. This Severn lifeboat was provided at a cost to the Fund of £879,750. She tours the coast assisting at many lifeboat stations by providing a relief service whilst the station’s dedicated lifeboat is unavailable for service
